GoFundMe has promised Homeless Veteran Johnny Bobbitt Jr. to receive the remaining $ 400,000 of donations due to him after the couple who raised the money spent the money on luxury goods and holidays.
Bobbitt became a national story after giving his last 20 dollars to Katelyn McClure, a woman who ran out of gas on the highway ramp outside Philadelphia.
McClure and his buddy Mark D Amico have launched the online fundraiser for Bobbitt, drawing contributions from over 14,000 people.
However, the story of well-being then fell into an ugly legal battle.
Bobbitt sues the couple, alleging that he only received $ 75,000 from the total and claiming that the couple spent the rest on items such as BMW and luxury getaways in California, Florida , Las Vegas and Grand Canyon.
The couple denies the allegation. A judge asked them to appear next week and explain what happened to the money.
On Thursday, GoFundMe announced that it would ensure that Bobbitt would receive all the money owed him.
"Johnny will be made whole and we are committed to receiving the balance of the unspent funds collected on his behalf," the group said in a statement. "GoFundMe's goal has always been to make sure Johnny gets the support he deserves."
The website indicated that he was assisting the police investigation. He said his commitment to Bobbitt was based on his "GoFundMe Guarantee", which covers beneficiaries when funds have been misused.
"We are fulfilling this commitment today and will continue to work with Johnny's team to ensure that he will receive all donations," he said.
Earlier Thursday, police executed a search warrant on the couple's home in Florence Township, New Jersey. No charges have been filed, police said.
The day before, a judge ordered McClure, 28, and Amico, 39, to appear in the evidence next week and explain what happened to the funds.
Last week, last week, they reported on NBC channel "Megyn Kelly Today" that they did not use the money, but could spend $ 150,000 after stating that Bobbitt had spent the money for drugs.
On Thursday, the couple's lawyer, Ernest Badway, declined to comment on the actual amount or search warrant.
He previously testified in court that Bobbitt had received at least $ 200,000 in funds, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
