The Illinois Department of Public Health has identified Walmart, 3801 Running Brook Farm Blvd., Johnsburg, as a potential source of exposure to Legionnaire's disease.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has identified Walmart, 3801 Running Brook Farm Blvd., Johnsburg, as a potential source of exposure to Legionnaire's disease.

Walmart officials announced Monday that the Johnsburg store would replace its sprinkler systems after being identified as a potential source of exposure to Legionnaires' disease.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has identified Johnsburg Walmart as a potential exposure site for residents with Legionella disease to Legionella bacteria. The ministry said 12 people from McHenry County had been diagnosed with legionellosis in June.

Officials identified a group of cases in McHenry and Lake counties in September and identified Walmart, 3801 Running Brook Farm Blvd., as a potential source of exposure.

"We take the situation seriously and out of caution, [we] will replace our sprinkler system, which is specifically designed with nozzles of different size and no tank to minimize and avoid exposure to this problem, "said Casey Stahell, national media relations manager, in a statement.

Stahell said the Ministry of Health had not confirmed whether the store was a source of exposure because the Legionella bacteria found did not constitute the strain that apparently caused the disease.

According to the Department of Health, Legionella bacteria are transmitted by fog or small water droplets from freshwater environments such as lakes and streams.
