The Oakland Raiders are certainly accepting offers for virtually every veteran player, but Jon Gruden insists that Derek Carr will not be traded.
Jon Gruden immediately made the Oakland Raiders the league's oldest team, with players who would have made a great team five years ago (Jordy Nelson, Doug Martin, etc.). Next, Khalil Mack was traded to the Chicago Bears in the middle of a battle that would have lasted all season, and more recently, Amari Cooper was sent to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
Gruden insisted that the 1-5 Raiders were not armored, which is what he is supposed to say to Oakland fans who will soon lose their team in Las Vegas. But virtually all veteran players could be moving ahead of next Tuesday's trading deadline, including quarterback Derek Carr.
The New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars stand out as teams likely to be interested in Carr. Gruden, however, hinted that the Raiders had not bought Cooper before the Cowboys apparently raised the bar. So, any statement by Gruden about trade must be taken with a grain of salt, but he nevertheless made it to reporters on Wednesday.
Not to refer to Carr by his name could be the first hint of a bit of indifference, and Gruden could basically tell other teams: "Make your best offer, and I could well accept it." ". But given the current alternative, A.J. McCarron, Gruden has also supported Carr.
Indications Carr has lost the confidence of some of his teammates. Gruden worries himself about the loss of the locker room after making the hypocrisy before and apparently secretive after trading Cooper. Negotiating Carr may well be the last straw, while the remaining Raiders are well aware that they are not given a legitimate chance to win games.
Gruden can say whatever he wants about not anticipating new trades or that Carr will not be traded. But skepticism says, at least at the moment, that there is no better than a chance to throw a coin. Carr is still a quarter of the Raiders next week at this time.
