Raiders coach Jon Gruden broke the film in a certain way when he was preparing Monday night football cabin. This method has not changed since he became a coach.
But the way he evaluates the staff – and the people who have the ear – has led to a disconnection in a Raiders building filled with people still trying to adapt to a new way of life.
According to sources, Gruden has essentially his own staff that helps him judge talent and make decisions – including the confidant and director of football research Dave Razzano – as well as a large number of trainees and assistants.
Gruden had his own editorial board and had his own professional advice, separate from those used by other members of the organization.
Previously, a long-respected NFL scout, Razzano took on importance while a voice on Twitter with controversial catch that included Von Miller will be a bust and Jake Locker should go No. 1 in the project. He has been dubbed the "rogue scout", but now has an office near Gruden's.
And although there is no animosity with GM Reggie McKenzie – on the contrary – it is clear to many Scouts who have signed for McKenzie that Gruden listens especially to those around him.
Some Scouts and Evaluators under McKenzie are frustrated that Gruden has his guys, who form a group that has led the signing of several veteran free agents, the abandonment of many draft picks and the Khalil Mack trade.
Part of the setup can be logistics, people need to speed up the way Gruden looks at cut-ups with a busy schedule. But none of the members of this circle is "Reggie McKenzie's guys".
Some have suggested that Gruden could start again after the season with the staff, but there is nothing better than the coach seems satisfied with this setup.
It 's really a question of McKenzie looking for other options after (as our Jim Trotter has reported) denying a chance to interview for other GM jobs last season. .
The factions meet for meetings and everyone is finally heard. But many people say they are frustrated at not being listened to, adding that they have never seen a split facility like this.
When Gruden returned to football, his approach often made him wince. His approach to evaluation is the latest example.
