Jonathan Stewart is close to getting back on the football field.

The Giants on Thursday designated the veteran running back for return to practice, paving the way for a potential comeback after a stint on injured reserve.

Stewart was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury in late September after appearing in the first three games of the season, making him eligible to return to the active roster after the Giants visit the Eagles in Week 12. The Giants are scheduled to host the Bears in Week 13.

Stewart, 31, was selected by the Panthers in the first round of the 2008 draft and spent his entire career in Carolina before signing a two-year contract worth $6.9 million with the Giants in March.

The Giants (2-7) are slated to host the Buccaneers (3-6) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
