The ceremonies held in a California cemetery marked the mass murder and mass murder of 900 Americans orchestrated by Reverend Jim Jones 40 years ago in a jungle colony in Guyana, South America.

The remains of over 400 Jonestown victims are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland.

Jones' adopted son, Jim Jones Jr., and other former members of the Peoples Temple presided Sunday at a ceremony in front of granite slabs bearing the names of the 918 people who died in Guyana on November 18, 1978.

Minister Jynona Norwood, who lost 27 family members, unveiled a portable memorial wall separately to honor more than 300 children and other victims. She left the names of Jones and those who, according to her, helped her.

California MP Leo Ryan, the Californian journalist, three journalists and a church defector were killed by gunmen from the temple on a runway.
