Houston Astros second-baseman Jose Altuve had surgery on the right knee, a source told Astros, which beat journalist Brian McTaggart. The team did not confirm. Altuve is expected to fully recover and be ready for spring training, the source said.
After being named the most valuable player in 2017, Altuve averaged .316 this year with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 137 games. It was the first time since his first full season in the major leagues in 2012 that he was not participating in at least 150 games.
Altuve, a six-time star, has beaten his knee for much of the second half of the season and playoffs. Altuve's knee injury slipped into second base in July in Colorado.
Astros manager A.J. Hinch told the media on Thursday that Altuve, who was the designated hitter of the ALCS Games 3 to 5, would have been on the disabled players list if it had been the regular season.
Altuve averaged .286 in the ALDS this year against the Cleveland Indians, where he played all three games in second base. Altuve beat .250 and was the designated hitter for three of ALCS 'five games against Boston, which resulted in a 4-1 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday.
