An ally of the late state senator, Jose Peralta, has criticized politicians for publishing statements mourning his death – after claiming they had not helped him re-elect him this year.
"I am shocked beyond words. I am also angry beyond words " Senator Diane Savino (D-SI) tweeted.
Savino said some Democratic party leaders and activists have treated Peralta as an outcast in the last 18 months after joining the Independent Democratic Caucus, a renegade faction that aligned with
himself with the Republicans.
Savino was also part of the IDC, which dissolved in the spring after the reunification of its members – including Peralta and Savino – with the Democratic caucus.
But some Democratic activists and unions have never forgiven Peralta.
They supported his main Democratic opponent, Jessica Ramos, who defeated the incumbent president and won the general election.
Among the people who made statements in mourning, Peralta's death remained neutral in his primary, including Queens Senator Michael Gianaris, who led the party's efforts to regain democratic control of the Senate and Hector Figueroa, President of Local 32BJ.
"He risked everything for his district and paid the price on the day of primary school. I am sure that all those who let it get revenge for simply wanting to be more effective in this fierce victory, the whole political game will pay tribute today, "commented Savino on Twitter, a few hours after the death of his death. .
"Save them, it's really too late. If people really want to be productive, use this tragedy to examine how we contribute to this brutal political game in which we talk about incendiary rhetoric, declaring who is "good" and who is "evil," she said.
"Life is short – do not waste that by hating people."
Savino has been known to know Peralta for almost 20 years. As a union leader at the time, she campaigned to help get Peralta elected to the state assembly in 2002, and he returned the favor by sending
campaigned with her when she won her seat in the Senate in 2004.
Peralta was elected to the Senate in 2010.
"He has been and has always been a strong advocate for workers and his community. All he's ever wanted to do is make a difference. He joined us at the IDC in 2017 and took the attacks in hand, "said Savino.
Savino, contacted Friday, said his tweets on the subject "speak for themselves." She would not identify the people she was referring to by name, saying "they know who they are."
Savino's angry reaction shows that there are still resentments and divisions within the party after six of the eight former IDC members have lost their primaries to the benefit of insurgent candidates.
Bronx Sen., Savino's boyfriend and former IDC president Jeff Klein, was defeated by his main opponent and elected senator Alessandra Biaggi.
His remarks are also striking because Democrats regained control of the Senate for the first time in 10 years, winning 40 of 63 seats in the November 6 general election.
Democratic Senate spokesman Mike Murphy declined to comment on Savino's explosion and offered his condolences to Peralta's family and friends.
