The score was 45-10 in favor of Denver, there were two minutes left in the match, the Cardinals offensive line had already awarded five sacks, and rookie quarterback Josh Rosen was out for a fourth and 16th empty meaningless. The decision to leave Rosen at a bloodbath has not been without consequences.
On Friday, Cardinals coach Steve Wilks said Rosen had made a sprained foot, but "should be in order and ready to leave next week," according to ESPN. The next stop for the Cardinals is a home game against the 49ers, the team that they beat for their only win of the season.
The injury seemed to occur during the last Cardinals offensive photo at the end of the two-minute warning. Immediately after being coached by Bradley Chubb, who scored Rosen's sixth sack in the match, Rosen grabbed her ankle. He then left the field before the Broncos had exhausted the last two minutes of the game – a game in which Rosen returned the ball five times and posted a passer-by score of 44.2.

Twelve hours after debacle, who dropped their record to 1-6, the Cardinals fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and spent the day playing at Byron Leftwich. But that should not absolve Wilks of his decision to let Rosen take the hammer during a game already over.
It is useful to let a rookie quarter take as many reps as possible and fight a tough game, but only if that rookie quarter does not present a major risk of injury. You could see the injury happen. The hits went up. By the end of the fourth quarter, it was clear that the Cardinals were not going to accomplish much of an offense. Still, they kept Rosen in the game.
It was absolutely right to question this decision during the match. And it's especially fair to question that decision after the match.
Ah, so Rosen rolls her ankle to be hit for the hundredth time tonight with 2 minutes to go in an eruption. Wilks just left after the third quarter? Can he make a good decision?

Cardinals are lucky that the damage was limited to a sprained toe. But unless they find a way to improve Rosen's protection in the future, their already lost season could have an impact on their long-term future. They must prioritize Rosen's future over everything else since it's the future of their team.
The season is already lost. Nor can they afford to lose their future.
