Juventus faces many social media criticism after Italian champions tweeted in support of Cristiano Ronaldo after reopening an investigation into rape charges against the young man 33 years old.
The striker, who signed a record of 112 million euros with the Italian club, strongly denied Kathryn Mayorga's accusations that she was raped by him in a hotel room in Las Vegas in 2009. Ronaldo, captain of Portugal to victory at the European Championship in 2016, was ruled Thursday by Fernando Santos of the 23 players of the national team for his match in the League of Nations against Poland on October 11 and for a friendly match against Scotland three days later.
The 33-year-old was also absent from the last Portuguese team. Santos spoke of the fact that the player had been transferred this summer to the Italian champion. Mayorga's lawyers filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo this week in a county court in Clark County, Nevada, and on Wednesday gave a press conference in which they said the Portuguese striker had 20 days from filing the complaint to respond.
Mayorga was not at the conference and his lawyers claimed that the alleged assault had caused him severe psychological and emotional damage.
"She decided not to make herself available to the media and stay out of the public because of her emotional state," said lawyer Leslie Stovall. "This is not nice for her."
His lawyers added that they planned to disclose the documents that they believed related to the case, including police reports, medical records and an out-of-court settlement that apparently included a non-disclosure agreement regarding the incident.
They claimed that one psychiatrist had determined that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress and depression because of the so-called Las Vegas attack in 2009.
Ronaldo has strongly denied the accusations on Twitter. "I strongly deny the charges against me," he said. "Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything I am and what I believe in. Wanting to make a name for myself, I refuse to feed the media show created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.
"My clear conscience [sic] will allow me to wait with tranquility the results of all investigations. "
