A shootout outside the banquet hall of Lakeland Manor in St. Clair Shores early Sunday caused the death of the gunman and a police dog from the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

The police responded to reports of a man outside the banquet hall at Harper Avenue shortly before 6:30 pm Approximately 70 people were in the lobby at the time. there, said the police.

The man with the gun would have ignored the multiple requests of the policemen and would have fled. Ax, a K-9, was used to track the suspect, who shot the dog with a handgun, police said. The officers fought back, hitting the man. The police did not reveal the name of the man.

Shooter and policeman K-P died on Sunday, police said. State representative Kevin Hertel was among those who expressed their condolences to Ax.

Hertel posted on Facebook: "Our prayers are going to the St Clair Shores Police Department and K-9 Ax who was shot dead during an incident tonight." We confirmed Ax's death. Thank you for your loyal service for the protection of our community. "

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard tweeted that "Ax has paid the ultimate price tonight."

"As always, we are eternally grateful to the men, women and dogs who protect our communities, Ax has paid the ultimate price tonight," he wrote, followed by the image of a broken heart.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office resumed the investigation, according to St. Clair Shores and the Sheriff's Office.

Calls to Lakeland Manor have not been returned.

The shooting has spread throughout the city and beyond Sunday.

"K9 Ax, from the St. Clair Shores Police Department in Michigan, was shot dead and our thoughts and prayers are with his partner, his family and his fellow officers," said K9 de Valor, an association with Ohio nonprofit that donates life saving equipment to police departments.

Officer Collin Rose Memorial Foundation announced Sunday night that he would donate a protective vest and a first aid kit to Ax's memory. "His two years of service ended tonight," said the post. "His life counted, our thoughts are with the agency and its partner."

A December 2016 article from Patch's news site indicates that Ax joined the St. Clair Shores force at the age of 2 years.

Ax was named after Petty Officer 2nd Class Marine SEAL, Matthew Axelson, 29, who lives in Cupertino, California, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. According to the article, patch.
