The Kansas State football team will give Samantha Scott's memory a helmet sticker when she plays the TCU this weekend.
Scott died suddenly of an illness last Saturday in Manhattan at the age of 23. She was one of the best helmsmen on the Wildcats rowing team this season. A native of Fort Morgan, Colorado, she was also a major in architectural engineering who won the academic honors of the All-Big 12 last year while leading the team's 1v8 and 1v4 boats.
The sudden illness was Lemierre syndrome, a rare and life-threatening bacterial infection that starts in the throat and spreads through the lymphatic vessels. Symptoms may include sore throat and fever, so the infection is not easily detected. The first symptoms are followed by swelling of the internal jugular vein.
The infection can spread quickly through the lungs, bacteria invading the body if they are not treated immediately.
The news of Scott's death has shaken the K-State Sports Department this week.
"We are all deeply saddened by the sudden death of Samantha," said K-State Athletic Director Gene Taylor. "The Scott family will remain in our prayers during this time and we will provide all the support necessary for the entire family and members of our rowing program to help them cope with this devastating loss."
The K-State football team will honor Scott's memory with a helmet sticker featuring two paddles, his name and a heart. The Wildcats will also take the field with a modified block of wood labeled "SAMANTHA".
K-State football players usually leave the locker room with a block that reads "FAMILY".
A gofundme page has been created to help Scott's family in this difficult time. The Scott family needs help to pay for his medical bills and funeral expenses.
Nearly $ 5,000 had been raised on Friday night.
