The co-governors of Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere welcome the program of planting 68,000 native trees along the shoreline.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage said the project would create 34 hectares of new kahikatea swamp forest as part of the government's One Billion Tree program.

Lake co-chairs Steve Lowndes of Environment Canterbury and Lisa Tumahai of Ngāi Tahu said the restoration of the forest around the lake will provide great cultural and conservation value.

It will create habitat for native birds and fish and improve the health of the wetland ecosystem by helping to prevent nutrients from flowing into the lake.

Tumahai said it would strengthen the work done by iwi and many others to protect and restore the cultural and ecological values of the lake and its shores.
