Kaiser Hospital evacuated due to possible shootings in Downey, authorities say

DOWNEY, Calif. – A person was arrested after authorities on Tuesday responded to reports that an "active shooter was" at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Downey, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Around noon, the sheriff's deputies and Downey police officers were rushed to the medical facility – located at 9333 Imperial Road – following reports of a possible shot, the department said on Twitter.

There were no immediate confirmed reports of gunshot wounds or injuries, according to KTLA.

A person – identified by the police as a "suspect" – was detained in connection with the incident.

The hospital was evacuated, with the authorities conducting a thorough search of the building for casualties or possible additional suspects, according to the sheriff's department.

The Sky5 video above the hospital showed many law enforcement officers at the scene and at least a dozen patrol vehicles were parked on the street outside.

Dozens of people who were released from the medical center were seen going out in single file, some with arms raised, showed aerial images.

As part of the ongoing police activity, people are asked to avoid the hospital. Those who are still inside the building are invited to take shelter on site.

Downey police confirmed there were no casualties in the shots.
