An Australian caregiver had a broken lung while her family and herself had resisted a wild attack by a kangaroo on their property.

Linda Smith, 64, and her husband Jim were feeding drought-affected kangaroos in Queensland when the 6-foot (1.82 m) gray returned to Jim.

The couple and their son resisted the attack, which wildlife protection officials described as rare, with a broom and shovel.

The animal jumped into the bush before the emergency arrived.

The incident occurred in Millmerran, about 80 km southwest of Toowoomba, Queensland.

Speaking from the hospital where both couples are being cared for, Ms. Smith told the Brisbane Times that some 30 kangaroos and wallabies arrive each night to be fed because of the drought and that they receive food. grain and the chaff.

She said, "This kangaroo came in and I thought it was Golly Gosh, one of the kangaroos we raised. He was a huge gray, he would have done at least 6 feet . "

As her husband, also in his 60s, fed the kangaroo, he turned against him.

"Jim was on the floor and the kangaroo just held it," said Ms. Smith.

She went to get a broom but the kangaroo tore it from her hand and attacked it too.

"Then my son came out to try to help me and hit him on the head with a shovel," Ms. Smith said.

She had a collapsed lung, broken ribs, abrasions on her arms and legs, and other internal injuries. She was operated on Sunday.

Her husband suffered multiple lacerations while his 40-year-old son was slightly injured.

The Queensland Ambulance Service operations manager, Stephen Jones, told Agence France-Presse that such a vicious attack was "something that I had not seen for thirty or so years." years in the service ".

He added that if Ms. Smith had not intervened to help her husband, "the outcome might have even resulted in death."

Mrs. Smith, who has been caring for animals for 15 years since looking for an orphaned joey, said, "I do not want this kangaroo to be hunted down and killed, I love animals."
