KAMPALA, Uganda – Kanye West handed Ugandan President a pair of his autographed sneakers on a visit to the East African nation on Monday where the rapper would record music in a tent.
President Yoweri Museveni, 74, said he and West had "fruitful discussions" on promoting tourism and the arts. He also gave West and his wife, the reality TV star, Kim Kardashian West, names "Ugandan", said the State House in a Facebook message.
The couple are on holiday in a national park in Uganda, while enthusiastic tourism officials see the visit as a recognition of the country's tourism potential.
While the Ugandan presidency published photos of a West-Museveni meeting with the hoodie at the State House, Ugandans ironically remarked that the president had severely repressed the sweatshirt earlier this year. saying that bikers could no longer wear them to fight crime.
Museveni, one of Africa's oldest leaders, has been at the center of unrest in recent weeks after local legislator Bobi Wine, who became a popular pop star, was tortured by security forces. The government denies it.
The many Ugandan youth have expressed frustration with unemployment and accused the president of being out of touch with reality. The government recently imposed a tax on social networks and the constitution was amended to remove the age limit of the presidency, which has led some to worry that Museveni plans to govern for life .
