Kanye West poses as Paul Simon's return: NPR

For the third week in a row, Saturday Night Live devoted a lot of time to Kanye West, opening the third episode of his 44th season with a re-enactment of the rapper's bizarre speech at the White House.

SNL cast member Chris Redd put on a MAGA hat to represent West, who made the headlines on Thursday when he gave a 10-minute soliloquy during his meeting with President Trump.

The opening began with a C-Span intro, which featured the encounter between the Grand West, Trump and the great footballer Jim Brown under the theme "Alternate Universes, Superman and Flying Cars". Alec Baldwin appeared almost weekly as Trump, inviting everyone to participate in what was "in no way a publicity stunt." Trump and Brown reacted to West's unusual suggestions, including abolishing the 13th amendment and financing invisible planes.

"Maybe we should order your lunch at a pharmacy," said Baldwin's Trump at one point.

At the end of the skit, Redd gets up to "hug my new dad" and Baldwin's Trump says to himself: "Do not check to see if your wallet is still there" before typing in his pocket.

Seth Meyers, SNL host and late-night host, hosted the episode, while Paul Simon returned to his 77th birthday at home, far from home: the Saturday Night Live step at 30 Rock.

Simon did his SNL-Records a ninth appearance as a musical guest in the comic late-night comedy show, which he also animated four other times. He directed the second episode of the series in 1975, which also included a set of three songs with former songwriter partner Art Garfunkel.

On Saturday night, Simon performed two songs with the New York chamber ensemble yMusic, who also accompanied him on his latest studio album. In the blue light. The first performance of the evening was a song from this album: a version "Can not Run Goal" arranged by National's Bryce Dessner. The song, which evokes the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, has taken on a new meaning in Simon's near-retirement, which was diverting attention from the composition and preservation of the environment.

But it's the second song of the night that shot down the house. Surrounded by members of yMusic and backed by a full band, Simon performed "Bridge Over Troubled Water", his Grammy-winning song from Simon & Garfunkel's 1970 album of the same name. At the end of the song, when the crowd burst a second time and before the cameras zoomed on commercials, an emotional Simon stroked his heart and thanked the audience.
