Kate Siegel talks about the obsession of Hill House

Kate Siegel has become a staple of the horror film, starring movies like Silence and Ouija: origin of evil. Now, she hits the small screen in The obsession of Hill House on Netflix.

The 36-year-old actress spoke to PEOPLE about her new role as Theo and her connection to her character traumatized by the grim events that have haunted the family home.

"I recognize what it's like to have in my childhood things that I always carry with me in adulthood," Siegel told PEOPLE. "I think we can all agree that there are weeks and months in our childhood that help train who we are in adulthood. I think that's what makes Theo so easy to understand for me and the public. "

The series The obsession of Hill House is based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 horror novel and is directed by Siegel's husband, Mike Flanagan. the Silence star actress alongside Michael Huisman of Game of thrones, Carla Gugino of Spy KidsTimothy Hutton How to escape murder and Elizabeth Reaser of The Twilight Saga.

According to Siegel, the Netflix version is a modern interpretation of the book.

"The writers took the sources, threw them in the air, crushed them, and then gathered and gathered together to help you better understand the kind of haunted house," she says.

The book has been adapted into a movie twice before. With heavyweight Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, the original movie, titled The haunting, was released in 1963. Siegel says she is inspired by Bloom, 87, who played Theo in the original film.

"[She] is just an icon. I felt like I had big shoes to fill, "says Siegel. "When I got lost in Theo, I wondered," What would Claire Bloom do? "And inevitably, it was the right choice."

Siegel described the series as intended for people who do not like horror. She described it as a "family drama wrapped in the skin of a thriller".

And while she continues to be scared to the screen, the actress says she has never seen a ghost in real life.

"I really do, so if you know, send them to me," she laughs.

"I am haunted by memories of experiences lived as children, adults. I'm coming into the rooms and remembering endless experiences there, "she adds. "At one level, I'm haunted all the time."

The obsession of Hill House starts airing Oct. 12 on Netflix.
