In written responses to questions from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee obtained by CNN, Kavanaugh described what had happened from his point of view when Fred Guttenberg approached him at the hearing.
Kavanaugh said that Guttenberg approached him "from behind and touched my arm". He said that he did not recognize it and "assumed that he was a protester". A "second" later, security came in, said Kavanaugh. Had he known, he would have expressed sympathy and listened to Guttenberg, writes Kavanaugh in response to a question from Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, chairman of the committee.
"In that split second, unfortunately, I did not realize that the man was the father of a shooting victim in Parkland, Fla. Mr. Guttenberg suffered incalculable loss, so I knew who he was. I would have shaken his hand, talked to him, and expressed my sympathy, and I would have listened to him, "he added.
Kavanaugh also stated that neither he nor anyone on his behalf had asked the Capitol Police to remove Guttenberg from the hearing.
"Nobody acted on my request," Kavanaugh wrote, answering a question from Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. "If anyone claimed to act on my behalf, they did it without my knowledge and contrary to my wishes."
Guttenberg's daughter, Jaime, was 14 years old when she died in February as part of shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
