CNN brings together a revealing and overwhelming panel of Republican women.
The Republican defenses of Supreme Court candidate Brett Kavanaugh were, well, rude. Kavanaugh was charged with sexual assault more than 30 years ago, and layoffs within the GOP range from "it did not happen" to "if he did, it's okay "to pretend that he must be proven guilty to be a Supreme Court Judge (instead of his character and his record are impeccable for him to qualify for the position).
The defenses are so scattered and embarrassing, in part because the thrust behind Kavanaugh seems to be routed. In a report of the weekend, the Washington Post details internal efforts to prepare Kavanaugh for the audience and explains what is at stake for the GOP, not just in the long run, but in the upcoming mid-term elections. The article titled "Incredibly frustrated". By the To post:
How Kavanaugh resists the storm – and if enough Senate Republicans support him – will help determine the ideological balance of the Supreme Court for a generation. A handful of GOP Senators are undecided as to how they will proceed with Kavanaugh's confirmation, particularly in light of Ford's accusation, and the party faces the most important political challenge: confirming a conservative reliably in court independent voters before the November midterms.
"Republicans need women's elections, but if this nomination goes well, everything will be fine (or it will be chaos)," wrote Dan Eberhart, an Arizona-based GOP donor. "If we can not make the nomination made, why vote Republican?"
Why indeed And Republicans have every interest in getting their confirmation as quickly as possible, because as it continues, support for Kavanaugh is getting worse. Even a Fox News poll has revealed that a "record number" of voters oppose his appointment.
But CNN has managed to bring together women who are always on his side. All five on the CNN panel said that they believe Kavanaugh 's denials and no one thought the incident should disqualify him from the Supreme Court, even though that' s not the case. turns out to be true. "Who are we to judge?" a woman asks.
None of the five women featured believe Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, and they dismiss all of her claims as being poorly formulated, based on jealousy or exaggerated. We even ask, "What boy did not do that in high school?" It's a shocking rhetorical question because it implies that the rape attempt is so commonplace that it hardly deserves to be recognized later and that if a man tries to rape a teenage person, this does not say anything about his character. And that certainly should not be held against him later in life.
However, these women are not middle-class Republican voters. They are all somehow affiliated with the GOP, from the Republican primary race to work for Ted Cruz's presidential campaign and to organizing $ 1,000 fundraisers.
It is not clear why these women were not more clearly identified in the CNN story. But that shows how much journalists need to reach to find women who want to see Kavanaugh decide laws for a generation. Hell, this could be the last handful of women in the country.
