There is more controversy on the quarter in Clemson. Trevor Lawrence is the starter of the team and Kelly Bryant could be directed elsewhere.
Dabo Swinney's decision to name Trevor Lawrence as a starter will have an impact on Clemson in a number of ways. The most immediate consequence could be the loss of Kelly Bryant to a school ready to give him their first job.
Bryant missed training on Monday, and reports are breaking that he and Swinney have engaged in aemotional"Discussion today. Rumors circulating around the Clemson program that Bryant might consider transferring to a school where he has a better chance of being the starter.
Remember, recent changes to the NCAA rules now allow players like Bryant, who only played in four games, to redshirt. This means that Bryant can transfer to another school without losing this year of eligibility. This means that other schools can still recruit Bryant with the idea that he can be their starter for the entire 2019 season.
Situations like Bryant's were not the intention of the rule, but it's next to the point. Expect to see a lot of quarterbacks start making that kind of choice when they are supplanted by a young player. This is not in itself a new phenomenon. What is new is that a senior like Bryant can make the choice and extend his career by an extra season.
If Bryant decides to leave, expect that many programs are very interested in bringing them to their respective campuses. He will be qualified as a Graduate Transfer, which means he will be eligible immediately in 2019. Bryant is not the most dynamic quarter, but he is, at the very least, a very competent quarterback. He was beaten by a special talent at Clemson, his demotion was not the result of a bad game on his part.
The real loser could easily become Clemson. Lawrence is certainly a better quarter than Bryant. He deserves to be the starter of the Tigers. The loss of Bryant will leave the Swinney team very thin at the quarterback position. If Lawrence is injured, Clemson's season could take a quick turn in a negative direction.
Bryant is a player to watch closely during the week. He is not sure he is leaving Clemson, but all signs indicate that this direction is in progress.
