Kenan Thompson has a new NBC show in the works, but what about SNL?

Kenan Thompson is a comedy institution at NBC with over 15 years as a member of the Saturday Night Live cast, and it seemed like for a time like Thompson would never leave the show until he was ready to retire someday. Now, however, Thompson has a new show in the Peacock network that could interfere with the ongoing work on SNL. Here is what we know up to here.

NBC has entrusted a production commitment to a comedy that will be starring and will be performed by Kenan Thompson. Also the executive producers are legendary SNL the creator Lorne Michaels and Hypermarket executive producer Jackie Clarke. The project is calling Save Larry and would play Thompson in a new kind of role that might require dramatic performances in addition to the comedy he's already mastering.

Save Larry follows a man (Kenan Thompson) who suddenly finds himself an unmarried father after the death of his wife. His new circumstances compel him to "be both mother and father of his children," according to the Deadline. He will not be totally missed, however. His father-in-law has a habit of "hovering" over his son-in-law and grandchildren. Although the series would have a tragic basis as a result of the death of the wife and mother, Thompson could undoubtedly do a lot of laughing in prime time. After all, he has more than proven himself Saturday Night Live.

Now, Save Larry is still in the early stages of development, with NBC making a production commitment only at this stage. That said, Kenan Thompson is an actor who could attract an important audience, because he can boast of having the record for the longest SNL cast member and scored two nominations at the Emmy Awards, earning one for music and lyrics of a song written for a SNL episode. Yes Save Larry gets a serial order, Thompson may have to say goodbye to Saturday Night Live as a regular member of the cast.

Certainly, it is possible that Save Larry could get a serial order to broadcast during the summer, when NBC does not have many original scripted series to offer and Kenan Thompson is on SNL hiatus. Save Larry above SNL would certainly be very busy Thompson, and the odds are pretty good that NBC would like a new series featuring a SNL favorite to broadcast during the regular season rather than keeping it until the summer.

We must wait and see. For now, Kenan Thompson fans can wait for him on the air again when Saturday Night Live presents his forty-fourth season (and Thompson's sixteenth) on NBC. Only time will tell. Saturday Night Live Season 44 has announced its first host and first musical act, and viewers should prepare to see less Alec Baldwin like Donald Trump this time around.
