LONDON – Kleenex maker Kimberly-Clark announced that he was going to rename his "Mansize" handkerchiefs after consumers complained about the sexist name.
The company said that following "a steady increase in the number of complaints about gender equality", the product will now be called "Kleenex Extra Large". The packaging for the fabrics describes them as "strong with confidence" and "soft touch".
Kimberly-Clark told the British Daily Telegraph newspaper on Thursday that it "does not indicate" that being both soft and strong was "an exclusively masculine trait", and we do not believe either. that the Mansize brand suggests or endorses gender inequality.
"Thanks to recent feedback, we are now transforming our Mansize fabrics into Extra Large Kleenex," the company said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch. "Consumers can already see the new name on our largest in-store boxes."
Kimberly-Clark said the product, which is sold only in the UK, has been on store shelves for 60 years, noting that he started selling big paper tissues when people routinely used handkerchiefs in cotton.
