Texas Tech has fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury after six seasons with the Red Raiders, the school ad Sunday. KENS 5 in San Antonio was the first to report.
Kingsbury has not recorded a winning season in the last three years, with a record of 35-40 at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are between 19 and 35 years old in the Big 12 since Kingsbury's arrival in 2013.
"I would like to thank Kliff Kingsbury for his six years of dedication to leading our football program," said Texas Tech Sports Director Kirby Hocutt. "He worked very hard and represented us in an exemplary way."
Texas Tech started the season in style, winning five of their first seven games. But the Red Raiders finished the year in a series of five straight defeats without playing in the last three games without quarterback Alan Bowman.
Kingsberry has resulted in his lot of awesome quarterbacks, aside from Bowman. Patrick Mahomes led the Red Raiders attack in 2015 and 2016, preceded by Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield.
Kingsbury started as a quarterback for three seasons at Texas Tech, totaling 12,429 yards between 1999 and 2002. He launched 45 touchdowns in his senior season, leading the country in touchdowns, yards and passes.
The Red Raiders have not won their conference since 1994. Their last double-digit winning season was won in 2008, winning 11 games under Mike Leach.
