The suspect, identified as Gregory A. Bush, 51, is in custody, said Jeffersontown police chief Sam Rogers. There was no known motive, and Rogers stated that the victims appeared to have been shot at random.

Bush is accused of having killed Maurice Stallard, 69, in the shop on Wednesday and a second victim, Vickie Jones, 67, in the parking lot. He entered the store and shot Stallard several times, killing him, according to the police. The suspect then left and shot Jones in the parking lot, they said.

An unidentified armed citizen in the parking lot exchanged fire with the suspect, the police said, but neither was hit. The suspect fled and was apprehended nearby, police said.

"We are shocked and saddened by the shooting incident that occurred around 2:30 pm today," Kroger said in a statement. "Thanks to the quick intervention of the local police department, the suspect was apprehended and our store is now secure."

Mayor of Louisville, Greg Fischer, said that Stallard was the father of a staff member, Kellie Watson, responsible for equity issues for the city of Louisville. Jeffersontown is about 13 miles southeast of Louisville.
"I'm just sick and heartbroken and quite angry, and I feel this way all acts of violence and cruelty," Fischer said.

Federal law enforcement agencies participate in the investigation.

Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf said the city was crying what he called "senseless violence".

"The sense of family predominates here beyond a single-family home and is adopted in our neighborhoods, businesses and schools," said Dieruf. "We are related spirits, no matter what our lifestyle, our worship, or our appearance, we are proud of that."
