The South Korean operator KT is associated with the Ghanaian government to fight epidemics in Africa and around the world with the help of technology. KT has signed an agreement to use Big Data for the prevention of infectious diseases with the Ghana Health Service. This is the first agreement for the CA on disease control. The West African region suffered a widespread Ebola outbreak in 2014-2016.
KT's Disease Prevention System analyzes location information, including roaming data that it collects. It then uses the data to see how to prevent outbreaks and set up a surveillance system that allows health authorities to assess the risk of infection at the initial stage of an epidemic. KT started working on the system in 2016 with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Agency of the Information Society to show how big data can be used to fight the disease.
The project came a year after the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) struck Korea. It is now seen as a showcase for collaboration between the public and private sectors. Building on the success of this project, KT is seeking collaboration with foreign governments and international organizations on the use of Big Data and Information Technologies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. To this end, the Korean society has proposed a global epidemic prevention platform at the World Economic Forum's annual conference in January.
