Ladies, avoid the processed meat; it can increase the risk of breast cancer

BOSTON: Researchers say that eating processed meats such as bacon, ham, sausages, salami and beef steak can increase the risk of breast cancer. Studies on the consumption of red and processed meat with a risk of breast cancer have generated inconsistent results, said researchers at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the United States.

An analysis published in the International Journal of Cancer reviewed all published studies on the subject.

By comparing the highest category to the lowest category in the 15 studies included in the analysis, processed meat consumption was associated with a 9% higher risk of breast cancer.

"Previous work has associated an increased risk of certain types of cancer with increased consumption of processed meat, and this recent meta-analysis suggests that consumption of processed meat may also increase the risk of breast cancer," said Maryam Farvid from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

"Therefore, the reduction of processed meat seems beneficial for the prevention of breast cancer," said Farvid.

Researchers have not observed a significant association between the consumption of red meat (unprocessed) and the risk of breast cancer.

Two studies evaluated the association between red meat and breast cancer stratified by the patient's genotypes regarding N-acetyltransferase 2 acetylator.

The differences in activity of this enzyme would alter the carcinogenic effect of the meat.

The researchers found no association between patients with fast or slow N-acetyltransferase 2 acetylators.
