Insects with red and black spots have so far been seen in Birmingham, Loughborough, Gloucester and Manchester.
However, the Harlequin ladybug – which may have black wings with red spots, the reverse of the typical ladybug – is harmful to British ladybug species.
Spotted creatures pose a threat to British ladybugs because they carry a sexually transmitted disease called Laboulbeniales disease.
According to the UK Ladybird Survey, the Harlequin Ladybug – Harmonia axyridis – is the most invasive ladybug on the planet.
The Harlequins followed the mild winds of autumn from Asia and North America to the United Kingdom.
Why do ladybirds with black STDs invade their homes?
Harlequin ladybirds were teeming with homes looking for a comfortable and warm place for hibernation.
The images and videos posted on social media show insects grouped around boilers, lamps and radiators.
During this time of the year, ladybirds begin to "spend the winter".
According to the UK Ladybird Survey, this means that ladybugs "congregate in leaf litter or other protected areas such as your house, shed, garage or other outbuildings.
"This is especially true for Harlequins, who are often grouped in houses."
It is this influx of houses in the fall that has given the ladybug Arlequin the nickname "Halloween ladybug" in the United States.
Are ladybugs dangerous?
STDs only affect arthropods – insects, crustaceans, centipedes, centipedes and spiders – so are not harmful to humans.
Aaron Greenwood, of Benchill, told the Manchester Evening News: "I've noticed all the articles on social networks regarding the ladybird invasion.
"I was with a close friend in my apartment having lunch and we both noticed that a small insect was flying in the room.
"My friend pointed out that it was a fly, I could say it was a ladybug as a fanatic of nature.
"This ladybird flew near my light on the roof of my living room.
"To look at it more closely, I saw three others. So I received a straw and an envelope, then I put them in a container and took them out.
However, if you notice ladybugs at home, it is best to leave them as they are, because when they are disturbed, harlequins vomit a yellow substance that can stain furniture and walls.
