While confirmed cases of measles in Lakewood have increased to 14 this week, health officials have warned the public that most unvaccinated people would develop the disease.
A person who contracted measles during international travel exposed other people to infection in Ocean County between Oct. 13 and Nov. 9, officials said.
"If you have been exposed, you are at risk if you have not been vaccinated or if you have not had measles," said the state health department in a statement. communicated.
"Ninety percent of people in close contact with an infected person will get measles if they are not vaccinated," the health department said.
Dr. Manal Youssef-Bessler, from the New Jersey Infectious Disease Center in Whippany, said on Monday that babies too young to be vaccinated and those with compromised immune systems were among the most at risk.
"It's crucial that people get vaccinated," Youssef-Bessler said. "It is very contagious and can spread from one meter – touching, sneezing or coughing."
Youssef-Bessler said that people with compromised immune systems, including those with cancer and receiving chemotherapy, are generally not eligible for the vaccine.
"It is therefore very important that immunocompromised people are not exposed," she said.
She added that pediatricians do not usually vaccinate babies before the age of 12 months, which puts them at high risk when they are near an infected person.
Anyone infected could develop symptoms by November 30, the state said.
Last week, the Motor Vehicle Commission closed a VMC office on Hooper Avenue in Toms River after health officials warned anyone on the scene between 2:30 pm and 2:30 pm and 17:15 on November 7 was exposed to infection. The office reopened on Monday.
Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes.
The first Lakewood case involved a person who went to Israel and contracted the disease. It was reported to the Océan County Department of Health on October 26th.
