The Ravens were quick to use Lamar Jackson in Week 1.
Jackson took part in the Ravens' touchdown landing and played five times in the first period, immediately becoming a new offensive wrinkle that opponents need to worry about.
In the first set of Ravens, Jackson lined up with a wide receiver and set out in his first play as Raven. Joe Flacco simulated a transfer to Jackson, then handed the ball to Alex Collins. The Bills were influenced by Jackson's threat during the transfer, and the wrong direction helped Collins find a weak spot in the Bills defense for a 14-yard gain. He was recalled due to a detention penalty, however.
It was the first match in the first half of the Ravens with Jackson in the field. Here is an overview of the other ways Jackson was used during the first semester:
– With the Ravens at the Bills' 15-yard line later in the opening race, Jackson sits center-wide with Flacco at the wide receiver. Jackson was arrested for no gain and was surrounded while trying to run. However, this shows Baltimore's desire to use Jackson in the red zone and Jackson, who plays quarterback, did not break Flacco's pace. The Ravens scored three times later on an 8-meter run led by Collins.
– In the second quarter, Jackson lined up on a wide catcher and took the ball on a setback. Quickly met by a defender of the Bills, Jackson reversed the pitch and looked for an open target. Willie Snead IV was open, but Jackson overturned him for an incompleteness.
– It was the last time Jackson touched the ball in the first period. He was lining up on the receiver again in his fourth game and his fifth games, but Flacco did not look like Jackson. In one case, it was again used as a decoy in a jet transfer.
It should be noted that Jackson only played one quarter click in the first period. Flacco was shooting the ball well and the attack was moving. Jackson is simply an addition to the Ravens offensive, not a focal point. However, by activating Jackson and using it quickly during week 1, the Ravens have established that it could be more than a mere lure.
Jackson's level of play from week to week remains uncertain, benefiting the Ravens. The opponents have to get ready for Jackson, and Flacco seems comfortable knowing that Jackson's packages will be part of the game plan. As the season progresses and Jackson becomes more comfortable, the Ravens are waiting for Jackson's biggest games to follow.
