At least four people have been killed by rocks and soil destroyed by heavy rains that have invaded their homes near a limestone quarry on the edge of the city of Naga on the central island of Cebu.

And dozens of others are to be feared under the dust and rubble.

Rescuers have managed to pull four people alive, but they fear that at least 50 more people will be trapped under the mud and debris.

Regional police chief Debold Sinas said: "The landslide buried about 20-24 houses and all the people who were there were trapped."

Councilor Carmelino Cruz added that the emergency services were looking for between 50 and 80 people.

He said: "The soil is still fragile.

"From time to time, you will hear vibrations."
