French President Emmanuel Macron took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the German Memorial of War Victims and Dictatorship.
Macron stood alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Neue Wache Memorial in Berlin as part of a national day of commemoration.
Macron is visiting because Merkel and he are lagging in the polls and need mutual reinforcement and support.
Merkel once backed Macron's proposal to create a European army, saying it would show the world that there will be no more war between European nations. The two men meet before a December summit intended to decide limited reforms of the shared euro in order to make it more resilient to financial and economic crises.
