ROME (AP) – The leaning tower of Pisa does not bend much anymore.
After more than two decades of efforts to straighten it out, engineers claim that the famous Tuscan steeple has recovered four centimeters (1.57 inches) more and is showing better structural health than expected.
The ANSA news agency quoted a consultant to the International Tilt Monitoring Committee, Nunziante Squeglia, as saying that the gradual recovery of the slope is good news but that the structural condition of the tower is greater.
The 12th century tower reopened to the public in 2001 after being closed for more than a decade to allow workers to reduce its inclination. Using hundreds of tons of lead counterweight at the base and extracting the soil under the foundations, the engineers initially shaved 17 inches off the lean.
