Protesters clashed with Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Monday on the occasion of separations of migrant families at the US-Mexico border, a sign that the policy of Trump administration immigration does not weaken.
Chao and McConnell, who are married, were about to ride in a black SUV when they were approached by a small group of young men at Georgetown University. We started to repeat, "Why are you separating families?"
A short confrontation ensues. "Why do not you leave my husband alone, why do not you leave my husband alone?" Chao replied that McConnell has entered the SUV.
"I do not try to disrespect you, but why is it separating families?" Said the young man. "I do not try to disrespect you, it separates families."
An angry Chao told the protesters to "leave him alone" while she was trying to walk to the other side of the SUV with the help of security guards.
"No, he does not separate the families," she said, "you leave my husband alone," she added, pointing to the group.
"How does he sleep at night, how does he sleep at night?" Asked a protester.
The meeting was captured in video and posted on Twitter by a user with the handle @ Roberto62543651. He identified himself and the other protesters as students from Georgetown when they were contacted by The Post.
The video was viewed more than 200,000 times in two hours Tuesday afternoon:
A journalist from Hill newspaper captured the episode in front of the camera and posted it on Twitter:
Chao's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for McConnell declined to comment.
Chao and McConnell are not the only Republican leaders to have faced the separation of migrant families at the border.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen clashed with protesters when she dined at a Mexican restaurant last week; White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was invited to leave a restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, over the weekend; and protesters gathered in front of Trump councilor Stephen Miller's apartment Monday night.
