For the sixth year in a row, Leesburg "goes from gold" to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Around the historic downtown, gold ribbons were attached to 113 parking meters by volunteers from Team Mathias, a local children's cancer awareness organization.

"Throughout the month of September, while driving or walking through downtown Leesburg, notice the golden ribbons and think about children and families affected by childhood cancer," said Roya Giordano, a resident of Leesburg. Leesburg Mathias died in December 2013 after battling bone cancer.

Giordano also launched a petition to encourage the The White House will "go for gold" for one night in the month of September. So far, 130,000 people have signed the petition.

The County of Loudoun Supervisory Council gave the Giordano family – along with another local children's cancer organization, Smashing Walnuts – a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month proclamation at its meeting on Tuesday.

"We are very honored and extremely grateful to be recognized for the work we do in the childhood cancer community and for the lives we touch in the loving memory of Mathias. We hope and pray that someday, there will be a cure for cancer in children so that no other parent can live with what we have to live, "Giordano said.
