The Ministry of Health added 10 more villages to the list of areas with an epidemic of leptospirosis, bringing the total number of villages affected to 28.
The City of Caloocan was "The number of villages affected has gone from 18 to 28," said Health Secretary Francisco Duque in an interview with the radio yesterday.
Leptospirosis is a bacterium infection caused by contact with floodwater, mud or food contaminated by the urine of rats.
Duque says that 58 people have died of the disease since January
Among the symptoms of leptospirosis: high fever, headache, muscle aches, redness, tea-colored urine, cough, diarrhea and vomiting.
If left untreated, leptospirosis may cause kidney failure, brain damage, massive internal bleeding, and death

Duque stated that his department has ensured that hospitals are well prepared and equipped to treat cases of leptospirosis.
