Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman resigned from his position to spend more time with his family in Detroit.
Yzerman said that he would become the senior advisor to Julien BriseBois, who will be the general manager of the team after being assistant director general. Yzerman, 53, was chief executive of the Lightning since 2010. He was entering the final season of a four-year contract and the team had hoped to sign him for an extension.
"I think this role change is important for me to allow me to spend more time with my family and to ensure that the Lightning is managed to the level that everyone expects," Yzerman said. . "We are all delighted that Julien is our next GM, he is more than ready."
Yzerman has been named General Manager of the Year for the 2014-15 season. During his tenure, the Lightning won a conference title and division title and played five times in the playoffs.
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk reiterated to fans Tuesday that he did not intend to move his team.
A day after appearing in a video on the club's website that said as much, Melnyk published an open letter in the Ottawa Citizen and Ottawa Sun that reiterated that he and the team are not going anywhere. "Our senators are in Ottawa to stay," Melnyk wrote.
