Lil Wayne has released his very delayed and highly anticipated Tha Carter V album Thursday at midnight.
Tha Carter V feature films by Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott and Snoop Dogg, sung by Nicki Minaj, Ashanti and Nivea, and voices of XXXTentacion, which was shot earlier this year. The final song includes an important sample of the English singer Sampha. The production of the album is due to Mannie Fresh, longtime collaborator, Swizz Beatz, Metro Boomin, Ben Billions and many others.
This album has been around for a long time: Lil Wayne has announced for the first time Tha Carter V in 2012, following the publication in 2011 of Tha Carter IV. But the fifth episode of Wayne's series, which began in 2004 when he was only 22, was stuck in label delays for more than five years.
The album was due out in 2014; Drake joined Wayne on "Believe Me", which was going to be the main single. This may have played a role in another delay: Tha Carter V was originally scheduled last Friday. The album was not presented – Lil Wayne called it a "misunderstanding" – but this week, the rapper posted a countdown on his website that ended Thursday at midnight. He also released a grateful video thanking his fans for their continued support. "I would like you to know that since I've been stuck with me for four or five years, all through this, I feel like Tiger Woods with this comeback," Wayne said.
The release of Tha Carter V gives Wayne two reasons to celebrate: he was also 36 on Thursday.
