Lindsay Buckingham sues Fleetwood Mac

What led Buckingham to leave the group is not entirely clear, although his pursuit is the subject of a debate on tour schedules.

Fleetwood Mac was founded in 1967 by Peter Green and is named after two of its members, Fleetwood and John McVie. Green left the group in 1969. Buckingham joined in 1974, the same year as Nicks, the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham has written some of the band's best-known songs, including "Go Your Own Way", which is the main title of the hit "Rumors" album, which was a hit in 1977.

Fleetwood Mac had a tumultuous history. The group paused in 1982 and when they agreed to return on tour in 1987, Buckingham was removed at the last minute. In 1998, Christine McVie left the band and joined in 2014.

"All we had on our sleeve, the discord and the nature of the group, it is the people who separate, the dysfunction," Buckingham told CNN at a MusiCares event, a few days before discovering that the group would turn without him. "Just below all this dysfunction is a great love."

CNN solicited comments from Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac.
