A lioness has killed the father of her three cubs in an American zoo, officials said.
Zuri, 12, attacked Nyack, 10, and staff at the Indianapolis Zoo could not separate the two. He died of asphyxiation.
The couple lived in the same paddock for eight years and had three pups together in 2015.
In a message on Facebook, the zoo said staff would conduct a "thorough review" to try to determine what had happened.
"Nyack was a magnificent lion and we will miss him tremendously," he writes.
Staff said they were alerted by "an unusual amount of roars" from the lion's enclosure.
Zuri held Nyack by the neck and despite efforts to separate the couple, the lioness continued to hold her partner until he stopped moving.
There has never been any significant aggression between the two men, the statement said.
"[Staff] to weave close ties with the animals so that any loss affects us all, "David Hagan, curator of the Indianapolis Zoo, told Reuters.
According to the release, they do not plan to change the way zoo lions are managed.
