Zach Zenner's tenure with the Detroit Lions is officially over. Wednesday afternoon, the team revealed they have given up the race to the reserve casualty list, which frees him from signing with another team if the opportunity arises this season.
A non-dismembered free agent from the state of South Dakota, Zenner decided to be part of the Lions team a few years ago at the camp, which was something positive to note for him. He trailed in the team for a few seasons and obtained satisfactory statistics, totaling 420 yards and 5 career touchdowns. His deciding game where he did most of his damage came against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.
Despite this, Zenner never seemed to be the full-time answer to Detroit because of some of its limitations. The Lions went with LeGarrette Blount this season and then drafted Kerryon Johnson, which means it always seemed like Zenner's time was running out. When he did not have a lot of looks this preseason, the writing was really on the wall as his time in Detroit was all but.
Blount has 5,888 career yards and 51 touchdowns in his nine seasons in the league. He has joined a championship that has been redesigned this season in Detroit with the team looking to improve its racing game. To this day, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are still on the lineup, but it's possible that there are still some moving parts during the offseason, as the Lions continue their comeback after the Johnson's writing in the second round.

Detroit's difficulties in the running match have been well documented, with the team not having a 100 yard run since the 2013 season when Reggie Bush accomplished this feat. Whether it's scheme, offensive line or talent at the post, it's not at all an area of success for the team, and Blount and Johnson hope to help change give it and bring luck to the team.
The future of Zenner on the ground is complicated. He dreams of becoming a doctor and has postponed this dream for a while, while continuing to work during the off-season and in his spare time in medicine. In Detroit, he was buried behind Blount Johnson and Riddick on the Lions Depth Chart. Ameer Abdullah is also present and, outside the Lions, he kept five halves, the battle for the last place always took place between Zenner and Abdullah. While Abdullah sometimes had difficulties, he may have offered the team a better place than Zenner given what he can do in special teams.
In the end, it will be interesting to see if Zenner clings elsewhere and if he can stay on an NFL list.
