List of shelters, open emergency operations centers for Hurricane Florence

As Hurricane Florence continues to head to the coast of North Carolina, local counties are preparing for eventual evacuations.

Residents who plan to evacuate should bring any personal items they may need, such as bedding, medications, hygiene items, etc.

In most places, alcohol and guns are prohibited.

Wake County

Residents of Wake County who have non-emergency issues should contact the officials at (919) 856-7044.

Johnston County

The Johnston County Emergency Operations Center has designated three hurricane relief shelters, which will open Wednesday at 8 pm

  • West Johnston High School (pets allowed, pets can not move freely)

    Benson, NC 27504

Halifax County

A shelter will open at Kirkwood Adams Community Center in Roanoke Rapids at 7 pm Tuesday. This shelter is primarily intended for evacuees from County Dare. The other shelters will open as follows:

  • William R. Davie Middle S.T.E.M. Academy in Roanoke Rapids (4391 Route 158, Roanoke Rapids) – opens Thursday at 8 am
  • Enfield-Inborden S.T.E.A.M. Academy at Enfield (13587 Route 481, Enfield) – Opening Thursday at 8 am
  • Scotland Neck Senior Center in Scotland Neck (1403 Church Street) – Opening Thursday at 8 am

Residents who go to shelters are required to bring home medicine, personal hygiene items, baby supplies, and so on. Food options may be limited. Weapons, drugs and alcohol are forbidden in shelters.

Hoke County

An emergency shelter will be opened at Don Steed Elementary School, located at 800 Phillipi Church Street, Raeford, beginning Wednesday at 6 pm. Wednesday.

Everyone who comes to a shelter should bring bedding, medicine, food (especially baby food and baby items), personal hygiene items and flashlights. Firearms and alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Animals are not allowed in shelters for the general population. For those who go to a shelter and need a shelter for dogs or cats, an animal shelter is offered at Don Steed Elementary School
Location of school shelters. The pet shelter will have cages, food and water. You must provide leashes and any necessary medication for your pet.

Transportation to shelters, particularly for the elderly and the disabled, is provided by Hoke Area Transportation, unless deteriorating weather conditions necessitate the cessation of these services. Those in need of transportation can call (910) 848-4646 and ask for the transportation coordinator.

Moore County

Moore County will open an emergency public shelter in Carthage from Hurricane Florence starting at 5 pm. Wednesday at Moore County Ag Building, 707 Pinehurst Avenue Carthage.

The Moore County Emergency Operations Center will be commissioned to handle all storm control and recovery operations starting Wednesday. The number to reach the EOC for assistance is (910) 947-6317.

Sampson County

Shelters in Sampson County will open at 1 pm Wednesday.

  • Hobbton College

  • Midway High School

Transportation to shelters, especially for the elderly and the disabled, is possible via Sampson Area Transportation, unless adverse weather conditions necessitate the cessation of these services.

People with transportation needs should call (910) 299-0127 and ask for the Transportation Coordinator.

There will be an opening for people with special medical needs.

People who rely on home oxygen or other medical resources dependent on access to electricity should make the necessary arrangements to have sufficient additional supply.

New Hanover County

A shelter in New Hanover County will open at 6 pm Tuesday.

All residents and visitors to New Hanover County must evacuate or be in a safe location by 8 pm Wednesday, officials said.

Buses will be available today for all County residents at 3:30 pm. and leave at 4 pm at Raleigh. Buses will depart from the west parking lot of the Government Center located at 230 Government Center Drive.

New Hanover County Emergency Management activates the Emergency Operations Center and the Common Information Center at noon Tuesday.

Anyone with questions about evacuation or shelter openings can call the helpline number from noon today at (910) 798-6800.

Cumberland County

Hope Mills has declared a curfew that will be in effect from sunset to sunrise starting Wednesday; no expiration has been defined.

Wayne County

  • All donations of personal care kits must be delivered to the Salvation Army, 610 N. William Street, Goldsboro, North Carolina.
  • Donations to areas south of the Neuse (Mount Olive, Mar Mac, Dudley, etc.) must be directed to the rail depot, located at 110 W. Main Street, Mount Olive.
  • Food donations from individuals and churches will not be accepted in shelters.
  • All donations of clothing and supplies must be delivered to the train depot at 110 W. Main Street, Mount Olive, South Neuse, and the Maxwell Center Farmers Market, 3114-A Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro.
  • DONATIONS OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN SHELTERS. OFFICIALS OF THE COUNTY WILL COORDINATE WITH PLACES OF RELAXATION FOR HOMELESS NEEDS.
