Live Market: Sensex and Nifty exchange after a flat opening; IT, pharma index up 1-2%

Market Update The benchmarks for the shares are trading down, with the Nifty yielding 10,450 marks. The Sensex is down about one-fifth of one percent.

The Sensex is down 71.57 points or 0.21% to 34662.01, while the Nifty is lower by 33.10 points or 0.32% to 10439.40. The market's breadth is narrow: 1,024 shares rose, compared to a decline of 688 shares, while 1,744 shares remained unchanged.

Among sectors, information technology and pharmaceuticals hold up well for the market, while the automotive, banking and metals sectors are weak. The midcap index is slightly higher.

Shares of ITC, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's and Indiabulls Housing are the biggest winners, while Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank, HPCL and GAIL have lost the most.
