SCENARIOS BEFORE THE GAME

Spain controls its destiny, more or less, and will advance if:

  1. Spain beats or binds Morocco

OR

  1. Spain loses to Morocco
  2. Portugal beats Iran

If Spain loses against Morocco and Iran against Portugal, Spain will have to beat Portugal to the goal differential. If they are tied to the goal differential, it would go to the break-even.

If Spain loses against Morocco and Portugal with Iran, Spain should lose only one goal, and then break the tie.

Basically, even if Spain loses, they have a chance to advance, although things get very complicated if they do. They have to take care of business and beat or tie Morocco to make sure they advance to knockout rounds.

Portugal will move forward if:

  1. Portugal beats or equates Iran

OR

  1. Portugal loses to Iran
  2. Spain loses to Morocco
  3. Portugal beats Spain at the goal differential
  4. If they are tied to the goal differential, it would go to the break-even.

Basically, even if Portugal loses, they have a chance to advance even if it would require that they lose to Iran unless Spain loses to Morocco.

They have to take care of business and beat or bind Iran to make sure that they advance to knockout rounds.

Iran can also move forward if:

  1. Iran beats Portugal

OR

  1. Iran tie Portugal
  2. Spain loses to Morocco by 2+ goals
