PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Dellin Betances stole the show from Jonathan Loaisiga with his usurpation of Gary Sheffield's identity – although the rookie right-hander played the scorer role for the team with the best baseball record.
Loaisiga scored a run-off in the sixth inning, Aaron Judge snapped his 20th circuit and the New York Yankees broke a three-game skid with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night.
All this meant that the Yankees could laugh at Betances' first appearance on the career plate. Flying with the goals loaded and one to eighth, Betances waved his bat like Sheffield as he took a shot at Yacksel Rios before missing out on two powerful swings. This drew the laughs of his teammates in the paddock.
"I loved watching Gary and mimicking his position," Betances said. "I was trying to do some damage, I took some good hacks, I got some for my money."
Betances said that he had not balanced a bat in 12 years.
"I hoped and prayed it would not be my turn," he said. "I saw the ball well. Playing wrestling with Aroldis Chapman helped me."
The judge and the rest of the Yankees enjoyed watching Betances trying to make contact.
"It was fun, a pretty cool moment," Judge said. "I'm glad he's not hurt."
Loaisiga (2-0) did not allow a shot until Jorge Alfaro lined up one right leading sixth. He retired eight strikes in five innings and one-third and shot 86 shots on his third start after jumping from Double-A to the majors.
"I felt good from the start, I was aggressive and attacked the area," Loaisiga said through a translator.
The Yankees, who were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend, have not lost four games in a row this season and have the best record in baseball (51-25).
"We just had to forget what happened in Tampa and get back on track," Judge said.
Making his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park since he beat the Phillies in six games at the 2009 World Cup, the Yankees felt at home. The crowd of 44,136 was filled with fans cheering for the Bronx Bombers.
Vince Velasquez (5-8) of Philadelphia allowed two runs and three hits, eliminating seven runs in six sets. He lost three points or less in 11 out of 16 starts.
David Robertson eliminated retired Rhys Hoskins and Odubel Herrera to leave the riders second and third after replacing Loaisiga in sixth. Hoskins did not run immediately after the ball bounced to a few meters and seemed to be swapping words with a fan after getting out of the shelter.
"He was a bit frustrated at the moment," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said of Hoskins. "Rhys always says and does the right thing, supports his teammates."
Robertson allowed Scott Kingery to win the RBI in seventh and give way to Betances for three outs. Chapman got the last four outs for his 23rd stop in 24 tries. He entered with two runners in the eighth and Carlos Santana flew deep left on the first field of Chapman. The southpaw left a solo circuit at Maikel Franco with two outs in the ninth.
Gleyber Torres had a double RBI in the first. The judge lined up one left in the fifth to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton hit a bouncer on the court-stop designed by Kingery for a mere two-point in the eighth, extending the lead to 4-1.
I-95 RIVALRY
The Yankees improved to 14-14 against the Phillies, leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers as the only team they lost a record (6-7) in the regular season. New York also beat Philadelphia in 1950 World Series.
TRAINER ROOM
Yankees: Gary Sanchez was put on the 10-day wounded list due to a groin injury in the first year. Director Aaron Boone said that Sanchez could miss up to four weeks.
Phillies: The right-handed nurse Edubray Ramos was placed on the 10-day wounded list because of an impact of the right shoulder.
FOLLOWING
RHP Luis Severino (11-2, 2.24 ERA) goes for the Yankees and the RHP Jake Arrieta (5-5, 3.42) takes the tumulus for the Phillies on Tuesday night. Severino has never faced Philadelphia. Arrieta is 3-1, 3.83 in seven career starts against New York.
