LONDON – British antiterrorist police have opened an investigation after the discovery of two missiles in an unoccupied apartment in northwestern London.

Police said on Wednesday that "the initial assessment" was that the objects were improvised explosive devices.

Police said the devices had been secured and the nearby apartments, evacuated as a precaution, had been reopened to the occupants.

According to officials, the area was searched and declared safe. The area had been cordoned off for about eight hours.

Police were called in the Craven Park neighborhood on Wednesday morning when the two suspicious devices were found in an apartment under renovation.

Officials say they keep an open mind about the incident and have asked the public for any information.

The official terrorist threat level of the country is set to "serious".
