Long Island Weather: Another Summer Day Before Michael's Rain

Wednesday should be like another day in October that looks more like summer than fall, forecasters said.

A recovery time comes for the weekend. And in between, we may have heavy rains on Thursday associated with Hurricane Michael, who will land on Wednesday on the Florida Panhandle and move Thursday to Georgia and the Carolinas.

Wednesday begins with areas of fog and a minimum temperature early in the morning for the day in the 60s, said the National Meteorological Service. And, actually, the minimum is warmer than the normal maximum of the day at Ronkonkoma's Long Island MacArthur Airport, which is at 65 degrees. As for the normal minimum, it's 47 degrees.

Peaks will be in the mid-70s on Wednesday. "It's almost August around Long Island," said Rich Hoffman, Meteorologist at News 12.

This takes into account the strong pressure on the East Coast that "will continue to provide hot and humid conditions," said the meteorological service. Already, Tuesday, at the end of the day, the October average was 9.6 degrees above normal.

Then, a cold front approaches, bringing risks of showers, with rain and a possible thunderstorm Thursday. The humidity of what will then be tropical storm Michael will be pulled north along the front for the afternoon and evening, announced the meteorological service. That's when the rain should be strong.

Approximately one to one and a half inches of rain is expected, which is higher for some areas.

The weather service also warned of dangerous seas on the South Shore, saying in harsh weather conditions: "The southerly winds ahead of an approaching cold front could blow briefly during a minimal gust on Thursday afterwards. midday."

After Thursday's stays in the mid-70s, temperatures dropped, with peaks in the mid-60s for Friday and low 60s for the weekend.

That's what the "cold front brings a cold for the weekend," Hoffman said.

The Friday morning showers will give way to some sun, said the weather service, while Saturday brings mainly sunny skies with afternoon showers. A mostly sunny sky is expected Sunday.
