While the icy air is waiting behind the scenes for Thanksgiving Day, those traveling to Long Island for a Tuesday getaway could go to showers early in the morning. Weather forecasts indicate that the sky will clear up for the afternoon.
Look for the "dry weather to travel tonight," said Long Island News 12 meteorologist Rich Hoffman. According to AAA Northeast, the largest number of New Yorkers traveling for Thanksgiving plans to leave the center after work Tuesday.
Temperatures remained stable for most of the day in the mid-1940s, the National Meteorological Service announced.
Wednesday brings sunshine and clouds as west-northwest winds rise and reach 25 mph, Hoffman said. Look for vertices in the quarantine. There could also be rain or a shower of snow in the early evening, he said.
That's when an arctic explosion sets in, setting the stage for what should be a cold air record for Thanksgiving, forecasters say.
The holidays are "sunny, windy and icy," said Hoffman, starting with morning minimums of about 20 degrees.
The day heats up to about 27 degrees, says the weather service, feeling much colder with wind chill. Temperatures take another plunge at around 15 degrees early Friday morning.
Normal temperatures for Thursday, November 22 are a maximum of 51 and a minimum of 35. The record for the day was 64 degrees, established in 1973, without any danger.
However, the coldest maximum temperature of 31 degrees, set in 2008, could be dislodged on Thursday with a maximum expected in the top 20. And the day's record, 20 degrees, set in 1987, was trying to be tied or broken.
