FALL RIVER – Celebrated annually in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is always a good time to remember some facts and figures about breast health and the value of screening. The American Cancer Society notes:
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, but if diagnosed early, it is usually cured.
More than 266,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year. In Massachusetts, 6,490 patients will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.
The good news is that the United States has more than 3 million breast cancer survivors, thanks largely to regular screening.
If you have to undergo your yearly screening mammogram, there's yet another good reason: according to an international review of the latest data on breast cancer screening published in the New England Journal of Medicine, women aged 50 to 69 Mammography screening reduces their risk of dying from breast cancer by 40% compared to non-screened women.
To encourage women to stay healthy, Sainte Anne will kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its popular "Treat Yourself Well" mammary screening event at the Robert F. Stoico / FIRSTFED Center on Monday. October 1, from 8 am to 7 am pm During this special event, women will be able to pass an annual screening mammogram, accompanied by treats, relaxing activities and free classes on the value of breast self-examination.
According to the current recommendations of the American Cancer Society, all women should begin to have an annual mammogram at the age of 45 and move to a mammogram every two years starting at age 55. Women should be able to start screening as early as age 40 if they want to. Breast self-examination is an option for women from their twenties.
The referral from a physician for an annual screening mammogram is not required; However, prior appointments are required.
For those who can not attend this special event, appointments for a mammogram can be made for other convenient hours early in the morning, evening and weekend. Same-day appointments are also available.
