Today in "the media helped propel Donald Trump to power", an anecdote of the Saturday Night Live step.
The creator of the Lorne Michaels series apparently squeezed SNL writers soften the behavior of Trump then candidate in the presidential election. The revelation comes from Taran Killam, a veteran of the six season series who left in 2016.
"Lorne was so specific about what we could and could not say about him," Killam said in a recent appearance on the I Was To To podcast.
"Lorne is like, 'It'll be too old now, and you know, you do not want to defame him … I know him, I've seen him in parties for years and years, and he says "No matter what it is that he thinks, and that's his thing, but … you have to find a way that makes him likeable."
According to Killam, Michaels lobbied to want to book the future US president as a guest. This finally happened in November 2015, just months after the official announcement of Trump's candidacy.
All this changed in the years that followed, of course. SNL (in) famous Trump skewers and his administration / the whole broken GOP for their broken head. The series is a favorite target of Trump's platform on Twitter.
